EMILY’s List Puts VA-2nd Congressional Candidate Suzanne Patrick “On the List”

Virginia Beach, VA – EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced today (LINK) that they have placed Retired Naval Commander and Democratic congressional candidate Suzanne Patrick “On the List.” In placing Suzanne Patrick “On the List,” EMILY’s List is urging their more than 2 million members across the country to back her in her campaign to defeat vulnerable Congressman Scott Rigell next year. EMILY’s List is one of the most influential political organizations in the country and helped dozens of women candidates raise tens of millions of dollars for their successful campaigns last year alone.

Suzanne Patrick is a centrist Democrat who filed her candidacy in late August. She has vowed to be a bipartisan voice to break the gridlock in Washington, to protect Medicare and Social Security from right wing privatization efforts, and to stand up for our military families and fight to end the sequester.

In response to the news, Suzanne stated, “I’m proud to have the support of EMILY’s List and pleased they have acknowledged the importance of this race. My opponent’s voting record and his partisanship, especially on the sequester, has made life tougher for the military, families and seniors in Virginia.   In Congress, I will fight for the middle class and to end the sequester that has been so hard on our families.”

More on Suzanne Patrick:

Suzanne Patrick is a fourth-generation military officer, and she, her Father, and brothers have over a century of uniformed service in the U.S. Navy and Army. In addition to her military service as a retired Naval Commander, she worked in the Navy Department as a civil servant early in her career under President Ronald Reagan. Most recently, she served as President Bush’s Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Industrial Policy.

Suzanne understands the importance of this district’s military facilities and personnel for the future of the district and the strength of U.S. fighting forces–as well as to the local economy. Her experience in Pentagon and Congressional budgeting will help her balance the need for deficit reduction without damaging interests critical to the district and to our nation’s global standing.

As a business executive well-versed in global economies, she understands the importance of our port to American trade and regional businesses. She will promote fair trade and the infrastructure and high quality jobs needed for our port to flourish.

Taking care of her Mother and Father here, she has learned firsthand the importance of Social Security and Medicare as earned and promised benefits.  She pledges to represent all of those who can least represent themselves:  children and the elderly.

Suzanne, as a centrist Democrat, will be a bipartisan voice working to protect, promote, and represent the core issues and values of the second district.

A 1977 graduate from Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, Suzanne went on to earn a Masters degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University. Named Washington Woman magazine’s “Woman of the Year” in 1986, Suzanne later returned to her alma mater in 2002 as a recipient of the Randolph-Macon Women’s College Alumnae Achievement Award, and again in 2008 as the College’s commencement speaker.

Suzanne is now an advocate for other women, mentoring young women pursuing careers in science, engineering, and the military and speaking on women’s issues internationally.
