GENERAL LAWS SUBCOMMITTEE FAILS TO PASS BILL TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO HOMELESS FAMILIES
This week I presented a bill, HB 451, which would have helped families who are homeless by providing them rental assistance so that they can transition into housing. The bill was defeated by a straight party line vote. There are surplus TANF stimulus funds available for the program. However, there are competing interests for these funds. Certainly, housing is a basic necessity that everyone should have. I argued that, as a matter of policy, it is important that Virginia take care of its most vulnerable and destitute. Unfortunately, the subcommittee disagreed and defeated the bill by a 3-2 vote.
