Blizzard Warning Issued for the City of Alexandria
Alexandria City government released the following
statement regarding the Blizzard warning issued in the city.
The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for the City of Alexandria until 7 p.m. Snow accumulations of 6-12 inches, high winds, and near-zero visibility are expected throughout the day. During a blizzard, any outdoor activity or movement is extremely hazardous.
City of Alexandria government facilities, public schools and all normal government operations are closed. The City remains under a state of emergency, and top priorities are providing mobility and access for emergency services by plowing and treating roads. The City urges that residents stay home, do not drive, and refrain from walking in the streets. The weather conditions could result in roof collapses, more fallen trees, downed power lines, and additional power outages. Please report power outages to Dominion Power at 1.888.667.3000. During today’s period of heavy snow and high winds, residents should not attempt to clear snow from their roofs. Watch for warning signs, such as creaking, cracking or popping sounds; doors or windows that become difficult to open; or new or quickly expanding wall cracks. If these signs occur, evacuate the building. Visit alexandriava.gov/RoofSafety for more warning signs and information.
The National Guard and public safety personnel from other locations have arrived to provide support for emergency services, and additional contractors have joined City crews to help with snow removal efforts. Crews continue to work around the clock, but with the amount of snow that needs to be plowed and moved from public streets, it is likely that residential streets may not be passable for several days. Residents can help out by continuing to clear snow around fire hydrants and storm drains, and from sidewalks.
