Exercises can help combat and prevent girls’ ACL injuries

It’s no secret that young women athletes are suffering an epidemic of crippling injuries to their anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs), one of the four strong bands of tissue that connect the leg bones at the knee joint. A decade of research and books such as Michael Sokolove’s “Warrior Girls” have shown that our daughters are three to eight times as likely as our sons to tear an ACL.

An E-Bulletin from Chairman Bulova – Latest Info on Haiti Team

While Demobilization plans are being developed, our USAR Team continues to respond to new requests for assistance and is conducting structural assessments and infrastructure stabilization activities. They have been delivering tents to several hospitals and orphanages and responding to other small humanitarian missions in and around the city.

Virginia Beach and New York USAR teams arrived home on January 23rd, and Florida USAR Teams, Miami-Dade and South Florida should have returned home today.

I have been told there is a likelihood that VA-TC-1 will be flying out of Haiti on Wednesday to the Dominican Republic, where they will spend the night. Tentatively, plans are for the Team to leave the Dominican Republic on Thursday and arrive at Dulles Airport late in the day.

I am working with officials at Dulles Airport for an opportunity for the public to welcome the Team as they arrive in the U.S. You may find information about the specifics, including a map to the airfield where the plane will be landing, on my chairman’s website at, http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/chairman.

At our Board Meeting today, I will move to invite members of VATF-1 to come before the Board at our February 9th Board Meeting to be officially thanked and recognized for their heroic efforts. The presentation will likely take place at approximately 9:30 a.m. in the Board Auditorium. Members of the public are welcome to attend and express their appreciation.

Del. Herring’s Crisis Pregnancy Center Consumer Protection Bill Gains Media Attention

Delegate Herring, along with Delegate Englin and Senator Northam, filed a bill to require Crisis Pregnancy Centers in Virginia to post signs to let individuals know that the center is not required to comply with HIPPA requirements and that they do not offer or refer abortion services. This bill is necessary to protect Virginian’s from misinformation. According to a year-long investigation, some centers have been engaged in practices to coerce and deceive women about their reproductive health. Since the state has tied itself to these centers with the “Choose Life” license plate by running the money for the purchase of these plates through the state’s coffers, it now has a constitutional interest to protect consumers who patron these centers.
