In today’s political climate, it has become more and more imperative for women to stick together. When breaking through the cracked glass ceiling, the Farm Team has discovered that it will shatter more effectively if women challenge it collectively. I joined the Farm Team for that exact reason: to belong to a support base of hundreds of intelligent and politically active women throughout the commonwealth. As a college student preparing to enter into the chaotic world of politics, and more importantly a female, I appreciate the importance of the work the Farm Team has accomplished.
Last weekend, I attended my first Farm Team event, the Campaign Boot Camp. As a previous graduate of the Sorensen Institute CLP program, student government leader, and President of the ODU Young Democrats, I had been accustomed to all types of seminars. However, this program catered to women, challenged what we knew about the topics, and really stood aside as valuable and informative. The Speakers, Miss McCoy and Miss Timmons, made the four hours fly by as they engaged and challenged the participants. I felt involved in the entire process, and their tips and tricks were helpful and will be useful for what I currently do at my university.
As a result of the boot camp, I decided to officially become a member of the Farm Team. Their commitment and dedication to women in politics is inspirational, and I am excited to be a part of this expanding group of outstanding women. I also hope to spread the word about the organization to other college-aged women and educate them on the importance of groups such as this one. It is amazing what one woman can do individually, and it is exciting to think of all we can accomplish together through the Farm Team.
