Priscilla Bele announces for NN Commissioner of the Revenue

From a campaign press release:

Priscilla BelePriscilla S. Bele, Chief Deputy to the Newport News Commissioner of the Revenue, announced today her campaign to succeed Mr. Charles Crowson, who has held the elected office since 1994. Crowson intends to retire in December.

Bele reached the decision to run for Newport News Commissioner of the Revenue after 15 years as Crowson’s Chief Deputy. During this time, she has served the City of Newport News as a talented senior manager, adept at balancing the equally important demands of government and private citizens. As Chief Deputy, Bele currently supervises over 40 personnel, operating at two locations within the City. Moreover, Bele has played a vital role in the implementation of modern office technologies throughout her tenure.

Ten reasons to attend the DFA Campaign Academy training in Newport News this March 14th & 15th:

  1. Learn how to plan and run a winning grassroots campaign
  2. Meet and hear from local progressive candidates
  3. Learn from trainers with decades of experience
  4. Mingle with other local progressive activists at social events
  5. Get a copy of our 180 page Grassroots Campaign Training Manual
  6. Set goals and make plans to pass progressive legislation
  7. Re-connect with old friends from the campaign
  8. Help elect progressive mayors, city council members and other municipal offices in 2009
  9. Learn to organize your neighborhood or precinct
  10. Look for a new job or volunteer opportunity

The training costs just $60 for the two days and it is a wonderful opportunity to learn a lot about grassroots organizing. I know that DFA member Linda Brooks has been trying for a number of years to get this training in our area. Already, more than 60 people have signed up to attend. Space is limited so if you want to go, head on over and sign up.

Mason set to run in the 17th

Farm Team regional chair Gwen Mason, a member of the Roanoke City Council, will be seeking the Democratic nomination for the 17th House of Delegates district. The seat became available due to the announced retirement of Del. William Fralin.

In an article published in Thursday’s Roanoke Times, House Majority Leader Morgan Griffith predicts that the district will remain in Republican hands. Mason said she’s running to win.

“I think when you have an economy like this,” she said, “people are looking to the Democrats for leadership to turn the country around: Someone rooted in the community who has basic understanding of local government, who’s prepared to fight for southwestern Virginia in a state chamber tilted heavily toward Northern Virginia. We need those voices. We need that presence.”

Other candidates mentioned as possible Democratic contenders are Rich Cranwell, son of  DPVA chair Dickie Cranwell, real estate agent Eric Thomas and fellow Roanoke City Councilman David Trinkle.
