Join The Farm Team at the JJ
The transformation made by the Democratic Party of Virginia since 2000 has been nothing short of astounding. Eight years ago, Virginia was believed to be “too red” to be competitive and was not viewed as a key national player. This past Election Day, Barack Obama became the first Democrat in 44 years to carry the Commonwealth. Meanwhile, Mark Warner was elected to the US Senate and Virginia Democrats picked up three congressional seats and control of the delegation! This year, all eyes are on Virginia’s Governor’s race and other statewide and local elections. We must continue investing in Virginia to make sure it stays blue.
The Democratic Party of Virginia’s annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner is the premier Democratic event in the state and will feature the entire Democratic Congressional & State Legislative Delegations. President Bill Clinton will be the keynote speaker. The Farm Team has several tables reserved – join The Farm Team Founders Mary Sue Terry, Susan Platt, Louise Ware, Kate Hanley and other Farm Team members at our tables. The price per ticket is $175.00. To purchase a ticket contact Natalie Jones or Julie Copeland. The tables are filling up so please call soon.

At the statewide meeting in Richmond Monday, The Farm Team officially endorsed Jody Wagner for Lieutenant Governor. Below is a message from our endorsee.
Thank you for your endorsement! I’m so proud to have your support as I run to be the next Lt. Governor of the Commonwealth. It has been a pleasure to get to know all of you and participate in Farm Team meetings across the state. Women in Virginia have proven able leaders in the fields of business and commerce, education, medicine, and law. Unfortunately, too few have followed the footsteps of Mary Sue Terry and Leslie Byrne in pursuing high office in the Commonwealth. The Farm Team will be integral in helping more women play active roles in Virginia government.

On a vote of 61-36, the U.S. Senate passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. The bill had previously failed to make it out of the Senate.
The bill is named for Lilly Ledbetter, a former employee of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, who sued the company when she discovered after her 19-year career that she was paid much less than her fellow male colleagues. The case eventually made it to the Supreme Court where, in a 5-4 decision, Ledbetter lost her case. The court ruled that employees must file a claim within 180 days of a company’s initial decision to pay a worker less money, regardless of when a discrepancy is discovered.
The bill overturns that Supreme Court decision, making each paycheck a new violation of the law and thereby extending the statute of limitations.
