Statewide Farm Team Meeting

The statewide Farm Team meeting last Sunday in McLean drew well over a hundred women from all corners of the state. Among those in attendance were elected officials, former elected officials, candidates, former candidates, future candidates, campaign managers, consultants and activists all united in a single purpose: to seek out, encourage, motivate, engage, enable, educate, and ultimately in any way possible help Democratic Women of legal age who have the desire, commitment and qualifications to be successful in the political office they seek.

A couple of pictures from the event.

And that includes a re-emergence of former Virginia attorney general and gubernatorial candidate Mary Sue Terry — whose election to statewide office put a substantial crack in the proverbial glass ceiling 23 years ago. She is building on momentum from this year’s election to assemble a group to recruit, encourage and raise money for female Democrats around the state.

Won't you join me?

Dear Friends:

My father taught agriculture and when I was four he coached a young man who won the national public speaking contest sponsored by the Future Farmers of America. While my memories are vague I’m told that I was a constant presence at all the coaching sessions (another form of babysitting, I suppose) and in short order had heard the speech so many times that I had memorized whole passages of it and could be found reciting them during the course of a day.

Today I only remember the first line of the speech which I find apropos to this letter. It was a question: “Future Farmers why are we here?”

No doubt there will be as many answers to that question within the context of The Farm Team as there are women who will respond to the call. I can only give my answer.
